  UGOOD awarded Shield and Certificate from CDA (Capital Development Authority, Islamabad) at Conventional Centre Islamabad on August 12, 2007
 

UGOOD has been awarded Shield and Certificate from CDA (Capital Development Authority, Islamabad) at Conventional Centre Islamabad, for collaborating and working with CDA as a partner and fully sponsored E-Block for almost eight month to Earthquake affected of Kashmir and NWFP.

UGOOD has sponsored accommodation, food, medical, schooling etc. for almost 520 families of Earthquake affected areas of Kashmir and NWFP.

UGOOD was assigned with the responsibility of administration and management of Block-E of the earthquake relief camp. There were 10 blocks in this tent city and each of them was administered by different NGOs. A total of 15,784 earthquake effected people belonging to various areas of Kashmir and NWFP were officially residing at H-11 Khema Basti (Tent Village).

Following is the detail of various activities and facilities that were provided in H-11 Khema Basti (Tent village) by UGOOD

1-  POPULATION
There were 128 tents in this block with an average of 8 persons living in one tent. Every person living in this tent village was to be registered with CDA and NADRA, and the record of all the residents is available with these authorities, however, there are some unregistered people as well. The detailed statistics of the population at Block E are appended below, it is mentioned here that these figures are based on the data collected by UGOOD officials and is the latest

1.2- SHELTER/ACCOMMODATION
The people were living in the tents and were provided with mattresses, Blankets, bedding etc. Three layer water proof tents are useful in the cold weather. The space, lighting, washrooms, water and sanitation facility was provided by CDA. However, UGOOD had to provide managerial support for maintenance of these facilities.

1.3- FOOD AND HYGIENE ITEMS
Food was distributed on weekly basis and it consisted of dry items, vegetables, meat, milk and fruits etc. Hygiene items like soap, toothpaste etc were also distributed weekly along with the food package. The food and hygiene items that being distributed at Block E by UGOOD were adopted from UN standards guidelines for food distribution.

1.4- MEDICAL CENTER
UGOOD was the only NGO providing full time medical facility with male and female doctors in the tent city at Sector H-11 Islamabad. Daily turnover was usually more than 120 patients and UGOOD provided free of cost medicine to every patient on the spot.

1.5- PSYCHOTHERAPY AND TRAUMA TREATMENT
UGOOD realized that the psychotherapy and trauma treatments are a necessity for the mental rehabilitation of these destitute people. For this purpose UGOOD arranged trauma treatment sessions with the help of some renowned psychiatrists. Consolation sessions for males, females, children and elderly were conducted twice a week at a special tent dedicated for this purpose.

1.6- UGOOD SCHOOL
170 children of classes 1 to 6 were enrolled in the tent school that was being run at the camp village by UGOOD. It was ensured that good quality education is provided to the children. Books, uniform and all other study material was provided by UGOOD and teachers were also paid salary. Here is the description of children and teachers etc.

1.7- ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL ETIQUETTES
There were a large number of children of various age groups residing in the tent village. Usually their parents being in a trauma condition due the disaster they have suffered were not in a position to properly take care of their children. However, it was very important to educate the children living in such a community about social etiquettes and manners. Realizing this fact, UGOOD was the only organization that has arranged modern English language and social manners training for these children. The children were educated about the daily English language and the social manners. The response to this activity was tremendous and about 180 children daily came into this interesting class where with the help of various games, songs, dramas etc they were trained about social manners and English language.

1.8- COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Various community development activities were undertaken by UGOOD at the camp village. The basic purpose of these activities was to bring some charm and happiness in the lives of these deprived people. Some of the activities are detailed below:-

1.9- UGOOD VOCATIONAL TRAINING
Large portions of population were the females. UGOOD believes that it’s necessary to involve females in the income generating activities so that instead of being burden on the families, they can contribute positively and can become an active and useful member of the society. For this purpose various skill development activities were arranged in the camps like stitching, sewing, cutting, beauty parlor, flower making etc. females are usually very interested to learn these skills.

1.10- UGOOD COMPUTER TRAINING
UGOOD arranged computer training for the young and educated boys and girls. They go to the training center and learn basics of computer-GOOD plans to arrange high level computer training for the interested and talented students.

1.11- AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS
 Time and again various awareness campaigns were organized by UGOOD. These campaigns were regarding the hygiene, health and cleanliness. Usually people living in the tents are not aware of the ways to keep their environment clean and healthy. They had no prior experience of living in such environment, so usually due to ignorance they create a lot of problems for themselves and for their neighbors etc. UGOOD teams usually the females go tent to tent and tell people how to manage themselves successfully in the tents.

1.12- UGOOD SPORTS ACTIVITIES
UGOOD organized sports activities like cricket match etc in the camps. One series of matches was started for children and one for boys. Players were selected from the camp and inter-camp tournament had been started by UGOOD. It has gathered a great interest among the people and they watch the matches with great enthusiasm.

1.13- MARRIAGE CEREMONIES
Marriage is a routine social activity that is helpful to bring people back to their routine lives. UGOOD encouraged the marriages that were taken place in the tents and a package of useful items like sewing machine, dinner set etc was given to the bride and groom by UGOOD as a gift of marriage.

1.14- UGOOD FUN FAIRS
UGOOD organized fun fair for the females and children so that they can enjoy their lives. Various games and fun activities are organized in the funfair, like musical chair etc. People participate enthusiastically in these activities.

1.15- MOSQUE AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Being a Muslim society, mosque is a very basic necessity where males can gather and offer the prayers. UGOOD arranged a big tent for mosque and a Qari was also employed for prayers. Moreover, religious education was also arranged for children and they went to the mosque and learnt reading of Quran.
