Majority of the clientele of UGOOD, directly or indirectly, depends either on agriculture or livestock to earn their bread and butter. Unfortunately, by the adoption of centuries old production techniques and methods, they are unable even to earn enough, to meet their basic necessities of life. There exists lot of room for improvement in these sectors. UGOOD helps its beneficiaries by means of:
- identifying existing production problems and finding their solutions
- introducing methods to get maximum benefits from the inputs applied
- introduction of modern production techniques and methods
- introduction of research based pre- tested farm technologies, like tunnel farming- growing summer vegetables in winter in low-cost green houses, which give amazingly high returns on investments (up to 300%) in just 6 to 7 months
- introduction of improved production inputs like hybrid seeds of vegetables & field crops, improved cattle breeds of dairy animals, improved poultry lines etc
- introduction of special farm products like micro nutrients and crop boosters to get early vegetable harvest with uniform fruit size and color
- Introduction of short duration crops of 2 to 3 months, with highest economic returns, as compared to other ordinary field crops
- Helping farmers to establish their own nurseries of high yielding fruit and forest plants for commercial sale and for self consumption
- Providing guidance to advanced farmers to establish difficult-to-raise vegetable nurseries, using hybrid seeds of high value with higher yield potentials, for vegetable growers of the area, as a commercial activity
- Helping farmers / vegetable growers / livestock breeders / poultry raisers, in the marketing of their produce to get fair price for their labor and investment, by minimizing the role of intermediaries
- Helping in promoting the concept of Joint Marketing by the farmers
- Developing liaison between the farmers and research institutions of the country, for the transfer of pre-tested farm technologies
To get acquainted with new technologies and services which UGOOD arranges / provides to its stakeholders, following Trainings are offered to them:
SPECIAL ADVANCED TRAININGS
Off-season vegetable cultivation in low-cost green houses
This being an advanced type of training is offered to groups of farmers with background in raising seasonal vegetables and having fair knowledge of this field. Farmers are trained in all type of production aspects i.e. enriching the selected field by applying organic matter through farm yard manure, poultry waste & green manure, raising seedlings of vegetable plants in nursery, preparation of seed bed, transferring seedlings into the field, application of NP&K fertilizers in adequate doses , erecting tunnel structure, covering tunnels with polythene sheets, harvesting techniques, complete plant protection coverage, tunnel management and care, risk management and confronting natural calamities like rain, winds and storms.
The training is imparted in segments, during the application of different agronomic practices, on different occasions throughout production period. The farmers are further helped by easy- to–understand instruction sheets for each agronomic activity, as ready reference.
Though the initial investment is bit higher as compared to other field crops but the returns always remain higher as compared to the investment, because of high demands and dry markets during harvest periods of green house crops.
Females are especially encouraged to learn this activity and special soft loans are arranged for them to meet the investment and other costs.
Orchard Management
Orchards of Mangoes, Apples, Citrus and other fruit trees do not give optimum yields according to their potential and sooner become non-bearing because of ill management and under-nourishment. Sometimes tree borers attack these fruit trees and the whole orchard becomes dry very fast- reason being Cholorosis- iron deficiency.
For the benefit of orchard growers, UGOOD has developed different Orchard Management courses which cover all management needs like orchard lay out, raising nurseries, selecting high yielding varieties for budding and grafting purpose, pruning & training of trees, maintaining uniform size of the fruits, orchard fertilization, micro-nutrients application, plant protection coverage, harvesting and post-harvest management.
Trainings are imparted using especially prepared easy–to-understand curricula and instruction sheets, helping to understand various agronomic practices.
GENERAL TRAININGS
Grain Storage
Farmers store large quantities of wheat and other cereals either for domestic consumption or for off-season marketing in bins or in open, which is damaged and infested by various insect pests. It has been estimated that up to 30% of these crops are damaged, during storage; with the deterioration of the quality as well which become unfit for human consumption.
Short courses for house wives for grain storage at home and bulk storage for farmers in godowns or bins, have been designed.
Food Processing
Food preservation courses for house wives, giving them skills to prepare squashes, achars, sharbats, morabas and chatnies, usingfruits and vegetables during their peak harvest when their prices are low, have been designed. This helps in reducing their kitchen budget and also learning of skills to adapt as economic activity in future, if needed.
Vegetable Drying
Vegetable Drying is another popular course, designed for house wives. Market prices of different vegetables falls up to considerable extent, during their peak harvest season. During this period, different vegetables can be got dried, processed and stored for onward consumption during the periods when these are in short supply in the market, with a jump in prices up to a considerable extent. Very simple techniques are involved in this process, which can easily be learnt by housewives and young girls.
Seed Dressing
About 20 to 30 % yield of different crops can be increased just by treating their seeds with some fungicide before sowing to make them safe from the attack of different seed and soil born diseases. Spores of different harmful fungi always remain present in the soil and just enter the plant at its growth, at very initial stage of its development. Seed dressing provides a protective layer of fungicide around the seed, which don’t allow harmful fungal spores to enter into the plant and damage it during different stages of its development. This is a short duration course and very easy to understand and adopt.
Lamb Fattening
Specially designed for poor and resource less rural women, with background in goat and sheep rearing, this course teaches them to learn different methods and easy-to-apply techniques to get 100% increase in their livestock weight. Special ration formulae have been developed, using in-expensive local raw materials, which they learn to prepare and feed to lambs which give desired results just in 60 to 75 days. The activity is carried out on Eid- ul –Azha festival, which gives women to earn extra money for their families, enabling them to share the happiness and joy of the occasion.
Forestry Plantation
The area under forests is declining at an alarming speed and farmers don’t pay attention for annual forestry plantation on their farms. They fear that shade of the trees reduces the overall production of the crops, which is true to some extent. But there exist some useful trees which help in increasing the production of different crops and give higher economic returns to the farmers, as well. Poplar is a good example of it but it is difficult to find its true variety, farmers are trained to establish nurseries of their own and are also helped in procuring true propagation material for this purpose. True variety of Poplar Deltoids can give an income of Rs 500,000 to 700,00 per Acre in just 4 to 5 years, with the additional benefit of extra income, if some other crops like sugarcane are planted as inter- crop. The training is open to both male and female clientele and is carried out during plantation periods, on two occasions in the year.
Nursery Raising- Fruit Plants
Raising nurseries of Fruit Trees is a rewarding business for farmers, having back ground in gardening and raising nurseries of various kinds. Farmers always face acute problem in acquiring quality and true to type seedlings of various fruit trees and they are cheated by ordinary nursery growers by supplying inferior quality seedlings which don’t give them required results. To solve this common problem of orchard growers, progressive farmers are trained in different methods and techniques of raising fruit tree nurseries for meeting their own requirements and entertaining their fellow farming community members.
Rat & Porcupine Pest Control
Rats and porcupines damage the field crops and orchards up to considerable extent and sometimes farmers face complete destruction of their crops. It is very difficult to control these pests by applying ordinary pest control methods because of their highly sensitive built-in sense of smelling the threats to their lives much in advance. They are bait-shy in nature and don’t consume any thing which may damage their life. After thorough research of many years, Scientists have developed different poisonous baits to dodge these pests and complete control can be obtained by using them in the fields and in the houses, as well. Comprehensive trainings have been planned for the farming community, in which they learn to prepare such baits and apply them in the field to control these pests.
